The opportunity to post longer-form video on Instagram is now a reality thanks to IGTV!
Just last week, the Facebook-owned company released an update that now gives its users the chance to post and share videos up to one hour in length directly from Instagram. This new update provides Instagram’s 1 billion users an opportunity to showcase their work in a new creative way and will give the popular video-sharing website YouTube some good ole’ competition.
What is IGTV?
So what exactly is IGTV, you ask? In essence, it’s your own personal channel to share those longer videos.
Available through it’s own IGTV app or through the already established Instagram app, all Instagram users can be content creators and have the ability to push long-form videos directly to their followers from one platform.
Before IGTV, users were limited to sharing videos up to 15 seconds in length through insta-story and up to 1 minute in length posting to the feed.
Now users have more creative freedom to share more content to their followers up to 1 hour in length.
How does IGTV work?
By going through the IGTV app or by hitting the tv icon within Instagram, users can post videos directly to their instagram following and explore videos (channels) from people they follow. Users also have the opportunity to discover new channels from other users through craftly recommended videos and popular videos shared on IGTV.
By notification, users will get notified through the tv icon within Instagram when someone they follow uploads a new video to their IGTV.
Just like you would with a photo, users have the opportunity to comment, share, and direct message people by swiping through videos that are uploaded to IGTV.
Creating a channel and posting a video to IGTV is mega easy. To create your channel, click on the tv within Instagram or open up the IGTV app, click on your profile picture or the gear which will then prompt you to create. Once your channel is created hit the plus button and you will be able to upload your video(s)!
One important detail to note – unlike Instagram – IGTV does not include a feature for capturing and making the videos you want to upload to your channel. To share a video to IGTV you must record it first through your phone’s camera.
How is IGTV Different?
The big difference? Just like insta-story these videos will be played in vertical format verses horizontal format. This is something all users need to keep in mind when shooting and formatting these long form videos.
Another big difference that will most likely be changing fairly quickly is the lack of advertisements. Currently, IGTV does not have any commercials (advertisements) streamlining through the various videos. IGTV also currently appears to showcase videos as they come in (in a chronological format). While this is where IGTV currently stands, this might be short-lived with the algorithm and the popularity of brands using paid advertising.
Wrapping it up
All in all, we are loving this new feature and can’t wait to see how IGTV develops more of a community within the ever-evolving world of social media!
